What Makes Special Offers in Marketing Feel Special?

Special offers in marketing can feel special when they run for a certain period of time and then do not come back for a long time. A special that repeats every month may teach people to wait for the next one, which can cost conversions, in Loren Weisman’s view.

  • A monthly special that looks the same as the last one may not feel special at all.
  • Conversions can be lost when a client sees the offer as available at any given time.
  • Different types of specials can still be mixed up when each one is genuinely special.
  • Exhausted audiences may see through contrived value and fake deadlines.
  • A special built to stand out can show what you have to offer instead of working from fear.

Specials That Are Not Special

If you’re going to have a special, consider making it special. My name is Loren Weisman. I’m a brand communications and optics strategist. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed so many people, from consultants to coaches to car ads, it’s this special.

Here’s my March special that seemed to be the same as the February one, as the January one, as the December one. Here’s our special price reduction. Except if you take a step back, it’s not that special.

Where the Conversion Is Lost

And perhaps that’s where some of the conversion is lost with potential clients. Because if they see that this is an opportunity at any given time, why is this right now, the time for them to become a client or for them to become a customer?

Making a Special Genuinely Special

It may be a bit challenging, but if you’re going to make something special, go to the word, make it genuinely special, make it something that is offered for a certain period of time and then don’t offer it again for a long time. Doesn’t mean that you can’t mix up different types of specials.

But if it’s known by people that visit you, that see you on social media, see your website, see your ads, here’s the latest special. They’ll just wait till the next one and the next one and the next one, and maybe they’ll just keep waiting because there is nothing special about that special.

Exhausted Audiences and Contrived Value

Think about it, frame it. Consider your audience, consider the exhausted audiences that are seeing this left and right. I’m having this super thing, oh, this value right now, this perceived value, this contrived value.

Specials Built Into the Script

And right now I’m giving it away for just this and only for this long pop back to that site in most cases, especially with these crazy fraud online courses, that’s specialism. It’s part of their script, it’s part of the website.

You get those little things, you sign up, you sign up for your email and oh, you know, you’ve got to act and get this price by this point, okay? And then it claims it goes away, except then it regurgitates and it’s available again.

Standing Out Without Working From Fear

People are smarter, people are seeing this. Stop trying to fool them, stop trying to work in a place of fear. Maybe right now you need a couple more clients. You need a couple more customers.

But in that if your going to create a special to try to draw those customers and clients in, then make that special, something special so that you can stand out with what you have to offer, with what your product is and for that special in the moment, so they can see you as special standing out from all the others that are just regurgitating the same crap discount over and over.

Marketing to Avoid in My Talks

The words, messaging, spam themes and marketing to avoid like the plague now.

Questions and Answers

Why do repeated discounts stop working on customers?

Repeated discounts can stop working because customers may learn that the next special is always coming. They may wait for the next one and the next one, and some may keep waiting.

What is fake urgency in marketing?

Fake urgency can be a price that claims to go away by a certain point and then comes back again. Many online course scripts and websites may build that timer into the sign up.

What makes a limited time offer believable?

A limited time offer can be believable when it is offered for a certain period of time and then not offered again for a long time. Keeping to that may let people see the offer as genuinely special.

Can customers tell when a special offer is not special?

Customers can often tell, since many people may be smarter about this now and are seeing it. A special that regurgitates the same discount over and over may look like all the others, as Loren Weisman sees it.

Can a business still run different kinds of specials?

A business can still mix up different types of specials over the year. Each one may stand out more from all the others when it is genuinely special and is not repeated right away.
