The Book

Alphabet Animal Adventures Across America, subtitled A to Z with Friends, Foods and Places to Go, is a picture book from Dadau Publishing, written by Olivia Weisman and Loren Weisman, for ages 4 to 8.

Each letter gets its own page: a name, an animal, a food and a city, with that page’s capital and lowercase letter behind the words.

The Story

Alert and adventurous, Arnie the Alligator eats appetizing apples in Atlanta, Georgia. Bertram the Bashful Bear watches beautiful swan boats on a public garden pond in Boston, Massachusetts. Chester the Cheerful Cat eats cherries in Chattanooga. George the Generous Giraffe eats grapes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Nathan the Neighborly Narwhal eats noodles in New York City. Quincy the Questioning Quail eats quesadillas in Queen Creek, Arizona. Unique the Understanding Unicorn eats udon in Urbandale, Iowa. By the time Zeebee the Zealous Zebra is making funny shapes at a pottery wheel in Zanesville, Ohio, the trip has gone from A to Z across America.

On every page, the name, the animal, the food and the city all start with that page’s letter, and a big watercolor letter sits behind the words. Real places are named only at the back, as a where to go guide. The book is dedicated “To Creative Dads and Daughters everywhere.”

Words to try out loud: alert, bashful, captivated, driven, enticing, frolicking, all the way to zealous.

The Characters

Twenty six animals, one for every letter, from Arnie the Alert Alligator to Zeebee the Zealous Zebra.

Hidden Letters

Every picture in the book hides its own letter: the A is hiding in Arnie’s picture, the B in Bertram’s, and so on all the way to Z. A seek and find page at the back lists more to look for: a hedgehog wearing glasses, a disco ball, a little green frog, a penguin in an ice cave, an empty plate with crumbs, a turtle wearing a backpack, a planet with a ring around it, a blueberry muffin, a hanging plant, a bird with a black cap, an orange peel on the floor, and a pink flower on a straw hat.

Who Made It

Olivia Weisman and Loren Weisman wrote the book together. For every picture, they wrote a description of what they wanted for the background, the character, the food and the location, then sent it to MyStoryBot, an AI illustration tool. From there, they adjusted and edited what came back until it was exactly what they wanted. The drawing on the back cover is Olivia’s own.
