What Is the Problem With One Size Fits All Consulting?
One size fits all consulting can put every client into the same template, and in Loren Weisman’s view some consultants do that to make as much money off clients as possible. A plan that suits you may not be possible without your experience, where your company is and how it is financed, so he looks for an agreement, a statement of work and a plan suited to the client.
- Consultants who template their clients may be trying to make as much money off them as possible.
- An engagement can run one shot, a week, a month, a quarter, half a year or a year, based on what each client needs.
- A business with its own assets, knowledge, team and money might only need a little help for a little while.
- Being bullied into a profit program that a consultant learned in a training built to get as much money out of you as possible may be worth watching out for.
- A clear statement of work can set boundaries and expectations on all sides, so both parties can see whether the fit is right.

One Size Does Not Fit All
One size does not fit all. And this goes for the strategists and the people you bring in to help. Watch out for the ones that are trying to template you so they can make as much money off you.
My name is Loren Weisman. I’m a brand, communications and optics strategist. And the way I work with certain people, it can be one shot a week, a month, a quarter, a half, a year, a year.
And this is based on what they need for them individually. If they only if they have certain assets, if they have certain knowledge, if they have the team, if they have money, they might only need a little bit of help for a little while.
Profit Programs Versus a Statement of Work
In other areas, maybe they’re going to need longer development. When you deal with someone like me or myself, make sure that you’re not being bullied into some profit program that one of these consultants took.
You know, their little training thing to get as much money out of you as possible. Make sure that there’s a set, clear line of a statement of work, of boundaries, of expectations on all sides to see if this is the right fit for you and to see if they can genuinely help you where you need that help.
The Upselling and the Bigger Package
Oftentimes this upselling thing, and it’s awful. You see these types, and I’m not going to name the names right now because you see them on YouTube probably every day. You need me, you need this, you need this kind of help.
Oh, it’s going to take a little bit longer. Oh, here’s the bigger package. How can you define a package when you don’t even know the individual that you’re talking to, what their experiences are, where their company is at, how they’re financed and so forth.
An Agreement and a Plan Suited to You
Point being, make sure anyone that’s approaching you or anyone that you approach, that they put together an agreement, a statement of work and a plan that is suited to you. And they can’t do that if they don’t have all the information.
So if they have some magic template, pop the bubble, move on, and realize that kind of magic doesn’t exist.
Vetting a Consultant in My Talks
Examining the claims: vetting a strategist, consultant, coach, trainer or expert.
Questions and Answers
How long can a consulting engagement last?
A consulting engagement can last anywhere from one session to a year, depending on what the client needs. A business that already has assets, knowledge, a team and money might only need a little help for a little while, while others may need longer development.
Why does a consulting statement of work matter?
A consulting statement of work can set a clear line for boundaries and expectations on all sides. Along with an agreement and a plan suited to the client, it can help both sides see whether the consultant is the right fit and can help where help is needed.
How can you tell when a consultant is upselling you?
Upselling can show up when the pitch keeps growing: you need me, you need this kind of help, it is going to take a little longer, here is the bigger package. Defining a package without knowing the person, their experience, where their company is and how it is financed may not be possible, as Loren sees it.
