How Does Speaking Volume Affect Your Message?

Speaking volume can shape how your message is taken in by the people around you. An excessive volume in a group of people who are not excessively loud can dilute your message, in Loren Weisman’s view, and being aware of your volume, posture and words can help you get your point across.

  • Being aware of your volume when you communicate can matter, since your volume can speak volumes around other people.
  • Certain people may seem unaware of things like volume, posture and certain words.
  • Managing your volume may not be about becoming something you are not, but about noticing how others take in what you share.
  • An excessive volume in a group that is not loud can dilute your message, so taking it down and dampening it may help.
  • Awareness of your volume and the optics of how you communicate can help you get your point across.

Being Aware of Your Volume

Your volume speaks volumes. My name is Loren Weisman. I’m a brand communications and optics strategist. And when you’re communicating with others, be aware of your volume.

We’ve come into a time that it seems certain people are unaware of things like volume, like posture, like certain words. And it’s not about becoming something you’re not.

Your Intention and How Others Take It In

It’s having an awareness for how others are interacting, reacting and taking in what you’re sharing, doing the best to get your intention across while not having the perception of something where it’s oh, this just seems really off or this is this guy’s too loud or whatnot. An excessive volume in a group of people that are not excessively loud can take your message and dilute it.

Take it down, dampen it. So again, be aware of your volumes. Your volume can speak volumes around other people and that awareness of that way you communicate and those optics of how you communicate can help you get across your point that much better.

Questions and Answers

Can speaking too loudly hurt your message?

Yes, speaking too loudly can dilute your message when your volume is excessive in a group of people who are not excessively loud. Listeners may come away with the perception that something seems off or that the speaker is too loud.

Does controlling your volume mean changing your personality?

Controlling your volume may not mean changing your personality, since it is not about becoming something you are not, in Loren’s view. It can mean having an awareness of how others interact, react and take in what you share, so your intention comes across.

How can you tell if you are speaking too loudly?

Watching how the people around you interact, react and take in what you share can help you tell. When your volume is well above that of a group that is not loud, taking it down and dampening it may keep your message from being diluted.
