Why Does Getting to the Point Matter in Your Videos?

Getting to the point can mean delivering the lesson in two minutes when two minutes is all it takes, instead of stretching it to twenty. Stating up front what you will get to may honor your audience and help you stand out, in Loren Weisman’s view.

  • Some YouTube advice may push creators to stretch videos out, tease viewers and dangle them.
  • Stretching a two minute point into twenty may not be honorable, ethical or professional.
  • Some videos can take longer because there is more to them.
  • Stating what you are going to get to, and why, can help an audience stay with you.

Two Minutes or Twenty

If you can get to the point or the lesson in two minutes and you’re taking 20, I believe there’s something wrong with you. Yes, I get it that there are many of these YouTube people that say, stretch it out, tease them, get to them, get them to subscribe, get them to, like, carry them all on, dangle them.

But is that really honorable? Is it ethical, is it moral, and is it professional? If you’re going to put out something, yeah, some of these videos, they take a little bit longer. There’s a lot more to them.

Stating What You Will Get To

However, if you’re going to be a true, transparent, honorable professional, get to the point, maybe even get to the point of stating, this is what I’m going to get to. And here’s what we’re going to go over and here’s why we’re going here and not becoming one of these people that’s trying to embed ads and do all the monetization stuff.

Get to the point. Honor your audience so that they can stay with you for longer, when your points may take longer, but stand out in a sea of people that are dragging things on too long by getting to the point to inform, educate and showcase what you know and what you feel your audience should.

Questions and Answers

Is stretching out a video for views ethical?

Stretching out a video for views may not be honorable, ethical, moral or professional when the lesson fits in two minutes. Teasing and dangling an audience to get subscribes and likes can work against the trust a creator builds, as I see it. I say in the video that if the lesson can be given in two minutes and someone is taking twenty, I believe something is wrong.

Are long videos a problem if they have more to cover?

Long videos may not be a problem when there is more to cover, since some videos take a little bit longer. Getting to the point can still help when your points do take longer. I acknowledge in the video that some of these videos take a little bit longer because there is a lot more to them. I say that stating what you are going to get to can help an audience stay with you when your points may take longer.

How can a video creator honor their audience’s time?

A creator can honor an audience’s time by getting to the point and stating up front what they will cover and why. That may help them inform, educate and showcase what they know. I say in the video to be a true, transparent, honorable professional, and to stand out in a sea of people who drag things on too long by getting to the point.
