What Is the Difference Between Research vs Opinion in Branding?
Research vs opinion in branding can come down to whether advice stands on discovery, analysis and proof of market, or on someone’s view. Asking why, and asking for the substantiated backup behind a suggestion, can help, in Loren Weisman’s view.
- Some people in branding, marketing and advertising may push their opinion more than ever lately.
- Advice given without discovery, analysis or a look at the exact market may put you in a box.
- Asking why when someone says what they think you ought to do can bring out what the advice stands on.
- An opinion may not fit who you are, what you are selling or your audience.

Selling an Opinion Over the Facts
Watch out for those trying to sell an opinion of theirs, as opposed to the facts of what may get your branding, your marketing, your advertising and your communication out there stronger. My name is Loren Weisman.
I’m a brand communications and optics strategist. And I’ve noticed a lot of people in this field in that branding, marketing, advertising.
No Discovery and No Analysis
Oftentimes and more so lately more than ever, they’re pushing their opinion, their view, this is what they see, what they think, and yet they’re not doing the discovery, they’re not doing the analysis, they’re not looking at the exact market, oftentimes putting you in a box and then presenting their opinion of what they think over anything substantiated or backed up to give that thought something that can really help you. So be careful.
Ask Them Why
Look to those when they’re saying, I think you should do this or I think you should do that. Ask them why. Get the substantiated, vetted, discovery, backup and blueprint so that as you move forward, you’re trusting something that stands on stability, that stands on an objective truth, that stands on proof of market over just somebody that’s excited and sharing their view of what they believe you should be doing.
Which oftentimes that opinion may not impact who you are, what you are, what you’re selling, or your audience.

Questions and Answers
How can you tell if branding advice is backed by research?
Asking why, and asking for the substantiated, vetted discovery and blueprint behind it, can show whether advice is backed by research. Advice that stands on proof of market may hold up better than someone sharing what they believe, as Loren Weisman sees it.
What is the risk of marketing advice based on opinion?
Marketing advice based on opinion may put you in a box without any discovery or analysis of your exact market. That opinion may not fit who you are, what you are selling or your audience.
What is a good question to ask a brand strategist?
A good question to ask a brand strategist can be a simple why. The answer may show whether the suggestion stands on stability and objective truth or on excitement.
